Orbeseal®

INTERNAL TEAT SEALANT FOR DAIRY COWS

Pineapple Dairy producers have trusted ORBESEAL®188体育平台 for 15 years to help protect cows from new mastitis infections during the dry period. ORBESEAL is a sterile nonantibiotic intramammary infusion in the form of a viscous paste. The first-to-market teat sealant works by:

  • Mimicking the cow’s natural first line of defense, the keratin plug
  • Providing a safe, antibiotic free physical barrier between the udder and the environment
Expand All
  • As the first-to-market teat sealant, the effectiveness of ORBESEAL® is well-researched. A University of Minnesota study found cows treated with ORBESEAL and dry cow therapy had:

    • A 30% reduction in intramammary infections during the dry period.1
    • A 31% reduction in clinical mastitis during early lactation in cows treated with ORBESEAL.1

In addition, the study saw improvement in all three key economic areas for the cows treated with ORBESEAL, including:

    • 20% improvement in incidence of new infections at calving.2
    • 26% improvement in clinical mastitis between dry off and 60 days in milk.2
    • 19% improvement* in somatic cell count at six to eight days in milk.2
  • Key features of ORBESEAL® include:

    • Mimics the cow’s natural first line of defense, the keratin plug.
    • Provides a safe, antibiotic-free physical barrier between the udder and the environment.
    • Compatible with conventional dry cow management practices.
  • ORBESEAL®188体育平台 is backed by dependable field support that provide training, evaluation and troubleshooting, all to help improve animal health, productivity and profitability. Exclusive Zoetis field support includes:

  • AFTER USING YOUR CURRENT DRY COW TREATMENT PROGRAM, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

    1. Teats should be clean and dry. If teats are not clean, CAREFULLY wash and dry them before disinfection.
    2. Using an alcohol pad, physically clean the end of the teat to remove any contaminated skin, dirt or manure. Repeat until the pad remains clean.
    3. Disinfect the far teats before the near teats to avoid accidental contamination of previously disinfected teats.
    4. Insert the syringe nozzle of ORBESEAL® into the teat canal, grasp the base of the teat near the udder attachment with two fingers, press firmly together and slowly inject all contents. Use one complete syringe per quarter. Do not massage. ORBESEAL must remain in the teat to be effective.
    5. Insert ORBESEAL into the nearest teats first, to minimize contamination of teats that have not been treated.
    6. After inserting ORBESEAL, mark the cow so others can tell she has been dried off. Then dip each teat with a quality teat dip.

ORBESEAL requires no milk or preslaughter withdrawal. Follow the withdrawal rules described on the label when ORBESEAL is used in conjunction with a dry cow treatment program.

TO REMOVE ORBESEAL, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

    1. To effectively strip ORBESEAL, be sure to grab the top of the teat ― where it meets the udder ― and work all the way down. Don’t grab the middle of the teat; squeeze and work down. This will only clear the bottom half of the teat. Strip the entire quarter by starting at the top and working all the way down.
    2. Strip aggressively ― 10 to 12 times per quarter ― for the first four days post-freshening. This helps to ensure that you're removing the plug and all particles of ORBESEAL. Do not remove ORBESEAL by action of the milking machine.
    3. Milk into a bucket for the first three to four days post-freshening. This will help to remove any remaining particles of ORBESEAL.

    Packaging

188体育平台Primary packaging for ORBESEAL is a ready-to-use polyethylene intramammary syringe filled with 4 grams of the teat sealant infusion. The product is supplied in plastic buckets containing 144 of the intramammary syringes.

  • What is ORBESEAL®?
188体育平台ORBESEAL is a nonantibiotic paste that acts as a physical barrier against mastitis-causing bacteria, locking them out for the entire dry period. When it is infused at dry off, new mastitis infections can be significantly reduced and somatic cell counts can be lowered.

    Is ORBESEAL an antibiotic?
No. ORBESEAL does not contain any antibiotics and, therefore, will not treat any subclinical or clinical mastitis infections that may be present at dry off.

Does the keratin plug seal all teat ends adequately and fast enough after dry off?
No. Many teat ends remain open, leaving cows more susceptible to new infections during the dry period. A recent North American study demonstrated that nearly half of all teats remained open during the first week of dry off, while over 23% of teats remained open six weeks after dry off.3

    How does ORBESEAL work?
188体育平台 Infusing a single tube of ORBESEAL into each teat at dry off mimics the function of the cow’s natural keratin plug by instantly sealing all teats for the entire dry period.

    How long does ORBESEAL work?
188体育平台X-ray images have shown that teat ends treated with ORBESEAL will remain sealed for at least 100 days, or until ORBESEAL is stripped out at calving.

I am already using a dry cow antibiotic and a mastitis vaccine in my dry cow treatment program. Why should I add ORBESEAL?
Research has shown that cows treated with ORBESEAL and a dry cow treatment program** had a significant reduction of clinical mastitis, even in a well-managed dry cow environment, when compared with a conventional dry cow treatment program alone.1 Results showed statistical significance in favor of the group treated with ORBESEAL, which exhibited improvement in three economic parameters:

    • 20% improvement in incidence of new infections at calving.2
    • 26% improvement in clinical mastitis between dry off and 60 days in milk.2
    • 19% improvement* in somatic cell count at six to eight days in milk.2

What are the important steps that should be taken to ensure fast and effective sealing of teat ends?
Each teat should be cleaned and disinfected prior to the infusion of any product. ORBESEAL is a sterile product, but the syringe tip easily can be contaminated with bacteria if aseptic techniques are not used. DO NOT MASSAGE THE UDDER after infusing ORBESEAL.

Do I have to strip ORBESEAL out by hand before applying the milking machine after calving?
188体育平台Yes. Stripping ORBESEAL out by hand is the best option. The removal of ORBESEAL by the milking machine should not be done.

    Is ORBESEAL safe?
188体育平台 Each tube contains bismuth subnitrate (65% w/w) in an oil base, which is safe for use in nonlactating dairy cows.

Does ORBESEAL have a withdrawal period?
ORBESEAL alone requires no milk or preslaughter withdrawal. When ORBESEAL is used in conjunction with a dry cow antibiotic, withdrawal on the antibiotic label should be followed.
